A New Driver's Guide to Navigating Hoppers Crossing's Roads

The Roads New Drivers Need to Know Navigating Hoppers Crossing
The main arterials you’ll use regularly are Heaths Road (C701), Derrimut Road (C702), Old Geelong Road, Hogans Road, Morris Road, and Sayers Road.
Heaths Road is the principal north-south connector linking Hoppers Crossing for learners to Tarneit and Truganina. During peak hours it gets genuinely congested. New drivers who’ve only practised on residential streets find multi-lane positioning here feels completely different to anything they’ve done before.
Derrimut Road runs north-south through multiple intersections with varying speed zones and steady local traffic. It’s the kind of road where speed transitions sneak up on you.
The area around Werribee Plaza and Wyndham Village Shopping Centre is also trickier than it looks. Car park driveways cut across footpaths, pedestrians step out between parked cars, and slow-speed precision is its own skill. Many learners underestimate how much attention it requires.
Speed Zones and the Transitions
This is one of the most consistent failure points, and one of the most avoidable.
In Hoppers Crossing, you move between zones constantly. Residential streets run at 50 km/h. Arterials shift between 60, 70, and 80 km/h. The Princes Freeway runs at 100 km/h. The problem isn’t the zones themselves. It’s the transitions.
Dropping from 80 to 60 km/h as you enter a residential area is common on routes through Hoppers Crossing. If you’re not reading signs early and braking progressively, you’re already speeding through the new zone before registering the sign.
School zones add another layer. There are multiple schools in Hoppers Crossing, including Hoppers Crossing Secondary College, Mossfiel Primary, and Bellbridge Primary.
During school hours, the limit drops to 40 km/h. Failing to observe a school zone is an instant fail under the Victorian driver test criteria.
Practice reading speed limit signs the moment they appear, not when you’re level with them. If your test is booked during school drop-off or pick-up times, know exactly where the school zones fall on your practice routes before test day.
Roundabouts: What the Rules Say
In Victoria, you must give way to any vehicle already in the roundabout, not just vehicles on your right. On smaller roundabouts, a vehicle that entered from the left or opposite side may already be in the roundabout, and you still give way.
For multi-lane roundabouts, lane positioning is tested closely. If you enter from the left lane, you exit through the left. Getting this wrong is not a minor error on test day.

Adjust your speed on approach, don’t brake hard at the entrance. Look right early, not at the last second. And check your mirrors before exiting. Failing to check mirrors when leaving a roundabout is one of the most common assessment failures we see on Hoppers Crossing routes.
Logbook Hours: Where Families Lose Time Without Realising
Victoria requires learner drivers under 21 to complete 120 hours of supervised driving, including 20 hours at night, before sitting the drive test. You also need to hold your permit for a minimum of 12 months continuously.
The 20 night hours catch families out more than anything else. Many leave it late and show up with entries that don’t survive VicRoads scrutiny.
TAC data shows that young first-year P-plate drivers are seven times more likely to be killed or seriously injured when driving between 10pm and 6am compared to fully licensed drivers. That’s the reason the night requirement exists.
Logbook entries get rejected more than people expect. Missing supervisor signatures or an incomplete Supervising Drivers page is one cause. Missing weather conditions, missing road types, and backdated entries also cause hours to be disqualified.
VicRoads verifies logbooks carefully, and if your total falls short on test day, your appointment is cancelled and you lose the fee.
One thing many families miss: even if you started with the paper logbook and switched to the myLearners app, don’t throw out the paper logbook. You’ll still need it for verification at the test.

We always check logbooks before a test. Fill in every column on the day of the drive, not the next morning. Get each supervisor to sign the Supervising Drivers page the first time they drive with you. Start your night hours from month one, not month eleven.
What You're Being Assessed On
The drive test in this area covers multi-lane arterials, roundabouts, shopping precinct traffic, and speed zone transitions. Hesitation on Derrimut Road, missed mirror checks before lane changes, and failing to adjust for speed drops are the patterns that consistently end tests early.
Once you’re on P1 plates, the rules shift again. Zero blood alcohol and no mobile phone use at all, including hands-free. Unlike some other states, Victoria doesn’t cap P1 drivers to a lower speed limit. You can drive at the posted limit, including on freeways, but the other restrictions still apply in full. Knowing these limits before you’re out driving independently matters more than most new drivers expect.
The point of 120 hours is to build your sessions deliberately across varied roads, times, and conditions. That variety is precisely what the system is designed to give you.
