The necessity of changing your overseas driving license to a Victorian driving licence depends upon whether you live in Victoria as a temporary or permanent resident.
The need for conversion your license is subject to the following guidelines:
- If you are on a temporary visa, you can drive through your overseas driver’s license for an indefinite period. However, your driving license must be current, valid and written in English (or you have an accompanying English translation or international driving permit).
- If you are in Victoria on a permanent visa, you can drive using your foreign driver’s license for six months from the date you first entered Australia (if the permanent visa was issued before you came in Australia), Or six months from the time when the permanent visa was issued to you (if the permanent visa was issued to you in Australia).
To keep on driving in Victoria after this time, you must hold a Victorian driver’s permit.
