Manual Driving Lessons in Victoria

Top 5 Reasons To Take Manual Driving Lessons in Victoria

There once was a time when a manual transmission–a three on the tree or a four on the floor–was known as a “standard” transmission. That’s because the “stick shift” was the basic transmission offered on every vehicle, while an automatic transmission was an expensive option. But the number of vehicles offered for sale with a manual transmission has been declining in Victoria., particularly in the last decade. In 2006, nearly 50% of new vehicles offered for sale in Australia were available with an automatic or a manual transmission. That number dropped to 37% by 2011, and by 2016 was down to 25%.

The number of cars sold in the Australia with a manual transmission is actually much lower, however, with experts estimating that fewer than 3% of new cars are sold with manual transmission. The migration of Australian drivers to automatic transmissions has even prompted sports car manufacturers such as Ferrari and Lamborghini to no longer offer manual transmissions in their new cars.

If you can find a car with a manual transmission, it’s really quite easy to learn how to drive a stick shift, and there are actually several advantages to shifting gears yourself.

Why are automatic cars more popular than manuals?

To start with, automatic transmissions allow a smoother ride for inexperienced drivers. They don’t have to worry about changing gears at the right time and doing the perfect hill-start when they’re just beginning, which makes automatics good options for learners.

Automatic cars are also more common, as previously referenced. Although new manual cars tend to be cheaper than automatics, people prefer the practicality of automatics, and seem willing to pay more for it. Driving a manual requires more concentration, even on short trips, and many don’t enjoy driving enough to choose the more active option.

Going for too long in a lower gear will waste petrol, overwork the engine, and frankly, not get you very far.

Again, every car is different, but shifting gears between 2,500 and 3,000 rpm (revolutions per minute) is generally good practice. With time, you’ll be able to hear when your car needs to change up or down a gear, making it like second nature.

Another thing you’ll be able to do is judge what gear you should be in, which is essential when slowing down quickly. Remember, you can drop more than one gear at a time should you need to, but you’ll rarely need to change up two gears at once.

Another argument for manual transmission is fuel economy. In theory, manual cars should deliver better fuel efficiency – drivers select which gear they think is most appropriate for the terrain, meaning they can avoid burning up precious dollars by turning the engine over on high revs.

One important factor remaining in the argument is driving behaviour, with manual drivers who drive more aggressively not always set to reap the rewards of fuel efficiency.

Summary, reasons to take manual driving lessons:

  1. new manual cars tend to be cheaper than automatics
  2.  you’ll be able to hear when your car needs to change up or down a gear, making it like second nature.
  3. manual cars should deliver better fuel efficiency
  4. drivers select which gear they think is most appropriate for the terrain
  5. If your friend has a manual transmission, you may be able to drive it if need be
