Things to Consider When Choosing a Driving School in Geelong
Test Route Things to Consider When Choosing a Driving School in Geelong Geelong throws a fair bit at learner drivers.
Camberwell is a demanding place to learn, and that is not a bad thing. Burke Road carries traffic from early morning to late evening, the Junction puts six roads and three tram routes into one intersection, and the streets behind the shops fill with parked cars well before lunchtime.
Learn here and you deal with real traffic from your very first lesson. Our instructors have been teaching across Melbourne’s inner east for years, so they know which roads suit a first-timer and which ones to save until you are ready.
Package Driving School offers automatic and manual lessons for Camberwell learners, with pick-up from home, school, work or Camberwell station. Whether you are starting from scratch on a fresh learner permit or booking a few hours before your drive test, we build the lessons around what you still need to practise.
Camberwell Junction is the one every local learner thinks about. Burke Road, Riversdale Road and Camberwell Road meet there on six separate legs, around 38,000 vehicles pass through each day, and tram routes 70, 72 and 75 all run across it. The speed limit on Burke Road through the Junction was dropped to 40 km/h to make it safer, which gives you more thinking time than you might expect.
We do not throw you into it on day one. Most beginners start on the quieter residential streets south of Riversdale Road or around Through Road, then build up to the busier arterials once your observation and lane discipline are solid.
Tram awareness is a big part of driving in this suburb. You need to be comfortable stopping behind a tram while passengers get on and off, sharing a lane with trams along Riversdale Road, and dealing with the right-turn setups near the Junction. These are the habits VicRoads testing officers watch closely, and they are the ones country-trained learners usually struggle with.
Parking is the other local skill. The side streets off Burke Road are tight, timed and often full, which makes Camberwell one of the better places in Melbourne to practise reverse parallel parking under genuine pressure rather than in an empty car park.
For higher-speed practice we move out to Toorak Road, Canterbury Road, Whitehorse Road and Warrigal Road, then on to freeway work once you are ready. School zones around Camberwell High School and the Burke Road schools are worth practising during drop-off and pick-up times, since the 40 km/h limits and sudden pedestrian movement catch out plenty of new drivers.
Most learners in Camberwell are booked in at the Ringwood Testing and Inspection Centre on Heatherdale Road, which is roughly 12 km from Camberwell Junction and about 18 minutes away in normal traffic. It replaced the old Burwood East and Mooroolbark testing sites and now handles the bulk of testing for Melbourne’s east.
Knowing the test area makes a real difference. We run test route familiarisation lessons around the roads your testing officer is likely to use, and we have a full breakdown of the Ringwood drive test route if you want to read through it before your lesson.
Before you can book the drive test you need to have passed the Hazard Perception Test, and if you are under 21 you need 120 hours of supervised driving logged, including 20 hours at night. The current requirements, fees and booking steps are set out on the Victorian Government drive test page.
On test day we pick you up an hour before your appointment, run a 60 minute warm-up on nearby roads, hand you the car for the test, and drive you home once the result comes through.
Manual and automatic cars ask different things of a driver, so we teach them separately rather than treating one as a version of the other.
If you want an automatic licence, you will be paired with an instructor in an automatic car and spend your time on observation, road positioning and traffic judgement. If you are after a manual licence, you get an instructor who teaches manual every day and knows how to get you confident with clutch control on the hills around Camberwell and Hartwell before you take on stop-start traffic on Burke Road.
Already hold an automatic licence and want to upgrade? Our automatic to manual licence program covers the gap.
Pricing is the same across our Melbourne service area, including Camberwell.

Block bookings work out cheaper per hour than paying lesson by lesson. Call us and we will put together a package based on how many hours you realistically need.
If you are a driving instructor starting out, or you need a second dual control car to keep up with bookings, we hire out both automatic and manual vehicles from $85. The same arrangement applies if you want a dual control car for supervised practice with a family member.
Lessons run across Camberwell 3124 and the surrounding suburbs, including Canterbury, Hawthorn East, Glen Iris, Surrey Hills, Balwyn, Kew, Ashburton, Hartwell, Mont Albert and Burwood.
We also teach further out in Box Hill, Glen Waverley, Doncaster, Mitcham and Vermont. If your suburb is not listed, give us a call anyway. We most likely cover it.
How much is a driving lesson in Camberwell?
Automatic lessons are $65 an hour and manual lessons are $85 an hour. A lesson plus test package is $220 for automatic and $285 for manual, which covers the pre-test warm-up and the use of our car for the test.
Where will my instructor pick me up?
Anywhere in Camberwell or the nearby suburbs. Most students are picked up from home, but school, work and Camberwell station all work fine. Just tell us where you will be when you book.
Which test centre will I be sent to?
Camberwell learners usually sit the drive test at the Ringwood Testing and Inspection Centre, about 18 minutes from the Junction. You choose the centre when you book your appointment, and we will tailor your lessons to whichever one you pick.
How many lessons do I need before my test?
It depends on how much supervised practice you have already had. Learners who have logged most of their 120 hours with a parent often need only a handful of lessons to clean up habits before the test. If you are starting fresh, plan for a regular weekly lesson over a few months. Your instructor will give you an honest read after the first couple of sessions.
Can I use your car for the drive test?
Yes. All of our test packages include the use of a fully insured dual control vehicle, which also means you avoid the pre-drive check problems that come up when a family car has a worn tyre or a faulty brake light.
I passed years ago but have not driven since. Can you help?
That is a common one in Camberwell. Our refresher driving lessons are built for licensed drivers who have been off the road for a while, and for anyone who feels anxious in heavy traffic.
