How Much Do Driving Lessons Cost in Frankston?

Driving lessons in Frankston will cost you more than just the hourly rate. There are VicRoads fees, test costs, and package decisions that quietly add up.

This guide breaks down exactly what you’ll pay in 2026, where you can save money, and what a realistic total budget looks like.

How Much Do Driving Lessons Cost in Frankston?

What Do Driving Lessons Cost in Frankston Right Now

Most driving schools operating in the Frankston area charge between $70 and $80 for a one-hour lesson. Longer sessions bring the per-hour cost down slightly.

Lesson Type

Typical Price Range

1-hour lesson

$70 to $75

90-minute lesson

$105 to $115

2-hour lesson

$130 to $140

5-lesson package (1 hr each)

$320 to $335

These rates apply to automatic driving lessons, which is what most Frankston learners choose. Manual tuition is available locally, but not every school carries a manual vehicle, so confirm before you book.

💡Tip:

A lot of learners focus on finding the lowest hourly rate and miss the bigger question: how many hours will they realistically need? Paying $70 per hour across 20 lessons costs far more than $75 per hour across 12. The instructor’s ability to prepare you efficiently matters more than saving $5 a session.

VicRoads Fees You Also Need to Budget For

Your lesson costs are only part of the picture. Here’s the current 2025-2026 VicRoads fee schedule for Victorian learner and probationary licence applicants.

Fee Type

Cost

Learner permit test (online, first attempt)

Free

Learner permit test (in-person or repeat, plus appointment)

$49.40

Hazard Perception Test (online, first attempt)

Free

Hazard Perception Test (in-person or repeat, plus appointment)

$42.80

Drive test (test fee plus appointment)

$73.30

Your drive test at Frankston VicRoads costs $73.30 in total, made up of the $51.80 test fee and the $21.50 appointment fee. Some schools also offer pre-test packages bundling a lesson with car hire for the test, usually around $235 for a one-hour warm-up. These don’t include the VicRoads appointment fee, so add $21.50 on top.

Both the learner permit test and the Hazard Perception Test are free on your first online attempt through myVicRoads. We still see learners paying to sit these in person out of habit, which costs over $90 more across both tests. Do them online on your first attempt and put that money toward actual lessons.

What Pushes the Cost Up or Down

Lesson length

A 2-hour lesson is cheaper per hour than a 1-hour session. If you’re progressing well, longer sessions let you cover more ground without the settling-in time that shorter lessons eat up at the start.

Packages vs casual bookings

A 5-lesson pack saves around $30 to $40 compared to paying per session. The trade-off is committing to one school upfront. If you’re unsure about an instructor, try one casual lesson before buying a package.

If You Have No Supervising Driver at Home

Not everyone has a parent or family member with a full licence available for 120 hours. The TAC L2P Program is a free Victorian government initiative that matches eligible learner drivers aged 16 to 21 (and in some circumstances up to 23) with a volunteer mentor and practice vehicle. Participants also receive up to seven free professional lessons through the program. You apply through your myVicRoads account.

What a Realistic Total Budget Looks Like

Stage

Estimated Cost

Learner permit test (online, first attempt)

Free

10 x 1-hour professional lessons (estimate)

$700 to $750

Hazard Perception Test (online, first attempt)

Free

Drive test (appointment plus test fee)

$73.30

Rough Total

$773 to $823

This assumes around ten professional lessons and a first-attempt pass on both tests. More lessons or a retest will push that number higher.

One last thing:

Some schools advertise a “first-time pass guarantee.” VicRoads decides who passes, not the school. Read those offers carefully. The real value of a good lesson is solid preparation for the actual test routes near Frankston, not a marketing promise attached to the booking.
