Things to Consider When Choosing a Driving School in Geelong
Test Route Things to Consider When Choosing a Driving School in Geelong Geelong throws a fair bit at learner drivers.
Canterbury looks like an easy place to learn. Wide tree-lined streets, no freeway cutting through it, and quiet pockets north of Canterbury Road where a first lesson can go very smoothly.
The catch is what sits either side of it. Burke Road, Whitehorse Road and Canterbury Road itself all carry heavy traffic, and any trip out of the suburb puts you straight onto one of them. A learner who only ever practises on Monomeath Avenue is in for a shock on test day.
Package Driving School teaches automatic and manual lessons across Canterbury, picking up from home, school or Canterbury station. We start where you are comfortable and work outwards at a pace that suits you.
Canterbury Road runs east to west and splits the suburb in two, and it is the road most local learners end up practising on. It carries steady traffic in both directions, has side streets feeding into it constantly, and gives you plenty of chances to work on gap selection and holding a safe following distance.
Maling Road is the opposite problem. The shopping strip beside the station is narrow, lined with more than fifty heritage shopfronts, and busy with parked cars, delivery vans and people stepping out between vehicles. It is one of the better places in the eastern suburbs to practise low-speed control, kerbside parking and patience, because there is nowhere to rush.
The residential streets are tighter than they look. Mature street trees, parked cars on both sides and a lot of single-lane passing mean you need good road positioning and a habit of giving way early. Learners who master this will find the test area roads much easier.
Mont Albert Road and the wider avenues in the north make a good middle step, with enough width to build confidence without the traffic volume of the arterials. From there we move out to Whitehorse Road, Burke Road and eventually the Eastern Freeway for higher-speed work.
School traffic is worth planning around. Several large schools sit in and around the suburb, and the streets near them become slow and unpredictable at drop-off and pick-up. Practising in that window on purpose is better preparation than avoiding it.
Learners in Canterbury are generally tested at the Ringwood Testing and Inspection Centre on Heatherdale Road, which now handles most of the testing for Melbourne’s east after Burwood East and Mooroolbark closed. It is a reasonably direct run out along Canterbury Road or Whitehorse Road.
Knowing those roads before the day takes a lot of the nerves out of it. We run test route familiarisation lessons around the area, and there is a detailed guide to the Ringwood drive test route if you want to read it through first.
Before you can book, you need to have passed the Hazard Perception Test, and learners under 21 need 120 hours of supervised driving recorded, 20 of them at night. The requirements, fees and booking process are set out on the Victorian Government drive test page.
If the logbook is the part holding you up, our logbook compliance lessons count toward your hours and make sure the record is filled in properly.
On test day we pick you up an hour early, run a 60 minute warm-up on nearby roads, hand you the car for the test and take you home once the result comes through.
We teach manual and automatic as two different programs, because they are.
An automatic licence lets you put all your attention on observation, positioning and traffic judgement from the first lesson, which is why most learners now choose it. A manual licence takes longer, and we spend the early lessons on clutch control and hill starts on the quieter rises around Canterbury before putting you into traffic.
If you already hold an automatic licence and want to remove the restriction, the automatic to manual licence program covers what you need.
Our pricing is the same everywhere we teach, Canterbury included.

How much is a driving lesson in Canterbury?
$65 an hour for automatic and $85 an hour for manual. The lesson plus test packages are $220 and $285, and both include the pre-test warm-up and the use of our car for the test.
Can my instructor pick me up from school?
Yes. We pick up from home, school, work or Canterbury station. Just let us know where you will be when you book the lesson.
My child is very nervous about driving. Can you help?
That is a large part of what we do. The first lesson usually stays on quiet residential streets, with no traffic and no pressure, and we only move on once they are comfortable. Tell us when you book so the instructor plans the lesson that way.
Which test centre will we be sent to?
Canterbury learners usually test at the Ringwood Testing and Inspection Centre. You choose the centre when booking the appointment, and your lessons will be tailored to that area.
Can we use your car for the test?
Yes. All test packages include a fully insured dual control vehicle, so you also avoid the pre-drive check issues that come up with a family car.
I have not driven in years. Do you teach licensed drivers?
We do. Our refresher driving lessons are for people who already hold a licence but have been off the road, or who have lost confidence in heavy traffic.
